Outdoor Inspiration with Paul Castell

Next up in our #DesignerViews series, we’d like to introduce you to Paul Castell. As the president of Dove Studio in Roswell, GA, Paul specializes in creating custom outdoor kitchens and living spaces that blend seamlessly with his clients’ homes.

1) What inspires you as a designer? First and foremost, the clients’ enjoyment of the end results. I like integrating the art of design with the science of products. I always ask my clients how they enjoy their current space, then show them what options are available to help them get the most out of a truly personalized space.

2) Which outdoor design trends do you feel are making an impact in 2018?

a. Performance cooking products.
b. Integrated design.
c. Moving from stone enclosures to cabinetry.

3) What should someone take into consideration when designing an outdoor living space? What should they ask themselves? Most importantly, learn how your clients currently cook and how they would like to cook in the future. Location is also critical to how you will use the space and how often.

4) The grill is the heart of the patio. What do you look for in a grill when you’re adding one to a design project? The product’s ability to survive the outdoor weather conditions. It is sad to see inferior products a few years later – falling apart, broken and not being used. I also put a premium on functionality: rotisserie, lights, searing and, of course, ease of cleaning.

5) What would you say to a client who is choosing between an outdoor kitchen, versus a stand-alone grill —and what impact does each have on an outdoor space? It all comes down to budget and space. I see a trend to utilize more efficient, yet higher-quality and higher-performance cooking products. At Dove, we also believe in complementing that performance with top-quality outdoor cabinets to transform the space.
